Course Content
This one year course consists of four major areas; anatomy and physiology, movement skills, contemporary studies in physical education and personal performance and its improvement through critical analysis. Anatomy and hysiology help to build a greater understanding of the structure of the human body and how it responds during the performance of a variety of physical activities. The focus of study is on how the structure and mechanics of the body, and the function and control of the body systems all interlink with the physiological make-up of an individual, to play a significant role in determining both the standard and effectiveness of the performance. The skill acquisition module develops an understanding of how individuals most effectively acquire and improve their movement skills in a variety of physical activities. Study focuses on the variety of movement skills exhibited in a performing environment, and how the development and control of these movement skills varies, from early childhood experiences through to competitive performance situations. Contemporary studies investigate the physical education and sporting scene in the UK today. The concepts of play, recreation, PE and sport are investigated with an appreciation of each establishing identifying similarities and differences. Analysis of the link between sport and culture in the United States is examined as well as two central themes of mass participation and sporting excellence in the UK. Students are assessed in two different practical activities with a particular focus on the acquisition and development of skills. This will be done through conditioned competitive situations. Evaluation of personal performance and a plan for improvement is also an element of the course.
