World Book Day Thursday 7th March 2024

On Thursday 7th March 2024 Park High school celebrated a wonderful World Book day. The purpose of World Book Day is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. As World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, recalls “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”

Here at Park High School there were a range of activities to celebrate reading for pleasure across the school. Year 7s and staff were dressed as a variety of their favourite book characters from Miss Trunchbull to Alice in Wonderland. Students from all year groups enjoyed a magical literary fair which consisted of book related activities from: Guess the caption to an Illustration station.

The Scavenger Hunt was a success as students hunted for clues around the school. As part of the celebrations, students have produced beautiful hand drawn entries for the National book token competition. Good luck to everyone that entered.

Thank you to all the volunteers that helped to make the day extremely special.
