The Jack Petchey Speak Out workshop came to Park High on Wednesday 10th January 2018 to work with some of our Year 10 students. Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out” Challenge! is a programme run by Speakers Trust and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation. They believe everybody should have the skills, confidence and desire to speak in public, and are dedicated to helping people of all ages and levels achieve this.
On the day twenty seven of our Year 10 students started the day in anticipation as they were about to embark on a fun and interactive day where they would learn how to speak in public and communicate easily with confidence and enjoyment. Soon enough the students were laughing and learning, being asked to step out of their comfort zone through fun speaking activities, many of them tapping in to potential they did not know was there.
The training is the most important part of the day, it gives the students the confidence and the skills they need to grow but there was also a competitive element to the training day. As the day progressed, the time came where the students had to become reflective and create a speech on something they were passionate about, which they would later perform to the rest of the students. In the afternoon the students took part in the competition against one another, they gave their “Speak Out” speech to show off their new found skills and talk about their passion to a panel of judges.
The day ended with a fantastic display of confidence, courage and oracy. We congratulate Cameron, Kamisha, Oranus and Urja on getting through to the next round. They will now present their speeches in a school assembly, and be awarded certificates for Highly Commended, 3rd, 2nd and 1st place. The winner will go through to the regional finals in April to compete against other schools it is an opportunity to improve their skills, win an award and to “Speak Out” in front of the Mayor, politicians and other schools.
