On Saturday 10th March Park High student Shaima took part in the South East Regional final of the Rotary Young Chef Competition held at New City College, London.
Shaima has done exceptionally well in this competition so far; she came first in this year’s local school heat and was runner-up in The London District Final, held at Redbridge College in Romford.
At the Regional Final, Shaima competed against 9 other students who were winners and runners up from their own Districts, from as far away as Norfolk and Bedfordshire. For this round the task was even more challenging as the students had to prepare a a 3 course meal for 2 people, costing no more than £15, in only 2 hours.Shaima made honey glazed prawns with grilled vegetables to start, her main course was home-made pasta with a spinach and ricotta filling and a rich tomato and basil sauce, and chocolate and beetroot eggless molten lava cake for dessert.
The judges were Lisa Shaw, a professional chef who owns four restaurants and has cooked for the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal, and Tom Gardner who has worked in the food and beverage industry for many years including 25 years running 4* and 5* hotels in South Africa and the Seychelles. The judges allocated marks for costing, planning, healthy choice of dishes, meal served at correct temperature, neatness of working area, hygiene, range of skills used, taste, and presentation. Judges also deducted marks for courses presented outside the allotted time.
The standards were incredibly high with dishes looking as good as the ones we see on TV for MasterChef. Unfortunatley Shaima didn't win this round but she has done especially well in the competition, and we are incredibly proud of her achievements and hope that she continues to cook and develop her talent. Shaima was presented with a certificate by the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of Redbridge.
We are sure we will see more of Shaima's cooking talents in the future.
