Virtual Work Experience

On the week of Monday 6th July Park High offered a virtual work experience for our Year 10 students in the place of our usual Work Experience programme, unfortunately, due to the current situation with Corona virus, the school had taken the decision to cancel this year’s Work Experience programme.

The daily online programme included a combination of live webinars, written activities, personality quizzes, employability quizzes and focused ‘spot light’ career videos and other work-related opportunities.

"It has made me write a CV much better through the guidance an advice."

Live webinars

Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th July

Inspiring the Future connected students to a safe online learning environment for some Virtual careers activities sessions using video conferencing software. Our students met volunteers from the world of work from a range of jobs and industries. The volunteers shared their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm about their jobs with our students and gave our students the opportunity to ask them questions about their careers.

Volunteers included:

  • Tara is on a Graduate Scheme at a Private Bank
  • Louise is a Work-Experience Coordinator for the NHS
  • Dimple is a Deputy General Manager at the NHS
  • Alistair is a Programmes Manager for Salesforce
  • Francesca- Judical Assistant, UK Supreme Court
  • Isaac- Clinical Scientist (Vascular), University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire
  • Claire- Editor at Summersdale Publishers

Students felt more confident about what careers are available when making decisions about their future.

"I have learnt that you shouldn't keep your options limited."

"I learnt about lots of different available career paths to go into different fields and that not everyone will know what they want to study or do."

Wednesday 8th July

We teamed up with the IGD a research and training charity in the food and grocery industry. They provided an employability programme to help students understand the skills they need to succeed in the workplace and brought to life the wide range of food and grocery careers. Students found out the answers on how to become a chocolate scientist? How to work for brands like Coca-cola? How companies are being sustainable? What science innovations are happening right now? How the food we buy gets on our shelves? What a graduate schemes are like?

We heard from an industry professional from the food and grocery industry and shared their passion for work, their experiences of work life and the skills they use and gave an insight into the variety of jobs available in the food and grocery supply chain.

Volunteers included:

  • Tracy Keating Tesco Store Manager
  • Serenella Sforza Commercial Graduate at Premier Foods

"I learned a lot about how many industries there are and the requirements needed to succeed in life. Also knowing what other options are available if you wish to do something out of the "ordinary"."

Thursday 9th July

We had a live Work Experience Session on 'Careers in Cyber Security and Technology' with Yogesh Ghandi a technology Engineer from Vodafone.

"I am considering new ideas for my future"

Friday 10th July

We had a live Work Experience Session on 'Confidence and How to Be Bold' with Gurinder Dhillon the owner of Otto Cars.

"You need confidence in what you’re doing if you want to succeed."

Overall our students seemed to enjoy the experience.

"Over the week I gained more confidence as I started asking more questions."

"Virtual work experience has changed my thinking, I was not quite sure where to go after I finished school but now I know what field I want to go in and how it will be to work in that field."

"Virtual work experience has changed my thinking, before I wanted to go to university but now I am thinking about doing apprenticeship."

"This week has made me build more confidence in what I want to do in the future."
