Park High School

Art

In Art, the progress of all ‘talented’ students (as with all students at Park High) is closely monitored. One to one interventions and support programmes are in place for those students identified as gifted or talented in Art who are not fulfilling (or exceeding) their potential at GCSE level.  In Art lessons G&T students are encouraged to embrace more conceptual design work and are guided to be more independent in their creativity. To achieve the higher levels at Key Stage 3 students are required to demonstrate originality and independence, and G&T specialised provision enables this high level of achievement. G&T students in Art are often encouraged to take on roles of leadership in collaborative group work to further develop both their artistic and social learning skills. Extension tasks at Key Stage 3 are offered to all students and accessible through the school’s VLE Fronter, though certain G&T students will be targeted to take up this opportunity for extended learning.

There are a large number of extra-curricular opportunities within the Art department to further challenge talented students. There is a weekly club for Year 8 & 9 G&T Art students, whose activities in the past year have involved working with the artist Chila Burman in a two day workshop. From 2013/14 academic year, Year 9 G&T Art students will be encouraged to take the Arts Award Bronze qualification, in collaboration with the Performing Arts departments. Part of this award will be designing and producing the set for a school musical.

The Year 10 G&T art group creates opportunities outside the lesson for students to develop their artistic skills, providing targeted students with one to one support, building upon and extending the work done in lessons. At A-level, G&T artists have the opportunity to take part in the ‘attRact’ project, working with artists at the Royal Academy.

Competitions such as the Fourth Plinth Project are regularly run within the Art department to give particularly talented students the opportunity to broaden their creative experiences.
