ICT

In ICT gifted students are given a number of opportunities to develop their skills and challenge themselves as learners. In lessons, particularly gifted learners will be given opportunities to extend their skills through engaging with more advanced programmes and applications, in response to their individual progress in lessons. Students are encouraged to be independent in sourcing challenges for themselves outside the lessons and as a result are offered a lot of flexibility in how they do this. Learners are identified as gifted by the potential they demonstrate, rather than specific levels of attainment.

Gifted learners are encouraged to become “Digital Leaders”, who offer support to other students and even staff, challenging their own competences as well as developing valuable leadership and interpersonal skills. Gifted students are encouraged to develop these skills further through peer mentoring, and further teaching and coaching opportunities such as the Park High Road Show, where students work with Year 6s from local primary schools.

All Year 9 students take a foundation GCSE in Computer Science, equipping them with the skills ready to progress and achieve at the higher levels when they reach Key Stage 4. This opportunity offers extension and development for the most gifted students, ensuring that there is always challenge provided for them to develop their skills working above and beyond the level of their peers.

There are a number of extra-curricular opportunities for gifted learners to extend their learning outside the classroom. Lunchtime drop-in sessions are available for all students, although some gifted students will be encouraged to use this time and staff support to extend their learning. A ‘Computer Programming with Python’ club is soon to be launched – again an opportunity accessible for all students but one which identified gifted students will be particularly encouraged to attend. Off-site trips are also run to enhance students’ understanding of ICT through different contexts in the real world. There are plans for trips in the academic year 2013/14, including a possible trip to the apple store.

The ICT department is committed to introducing new technologies so that gifted students are given the opportunities to keep up to date and working above and beyond the advances in their field (e.g: the investment in Raspberry Pis).
