Park High Celebrates International Women’s Day

Park High Celebrates International Women’s Day with a special trip to British Airways to take part in their Women in Engineering Inspire Day.

We were one of only a handful of school’s lucky enough to take part in this event.  Eight of our exemplary year 10 students were invited to BA Headquarters near Heathrow for a day that included talks by leading women in engineering management and female engineering graduates. We were lucky enough to have tours of the 777, 380 and the new 787 Dreamliner, Boeing's most fuel-efficient airliner and is a pioneering airliner with the use of composite materials in the construction of its airframe. BA are actively seeking to recruit many women to their multitude of engineering departments from those working in plane structural and mechanical engineering through to those designing IT software and first class accommodation.

My experience at BA Engineering by Leah:

My day learning about engineering was so exciting. I learnt that there were many jobs available that meant that you didn’t need to get your hands dirty in engineering, such as IT engineering that allows you to install the programs for the TV sets on the back of the seats, and design engineer that allows you to draw and plan the new models for the planes. but also they would come to you if they cannot get something to work to see if you have a way round the problem using your design work.

When visiting BA, I found it fascinating that the facility was so big because I thought they just flew planes and had flight attendants, I didn’t realise there is a big company that employs thousands of engineers to design and make both the interior and exterior of the plane to make the journey pleasurable.

Did you know they strip the plane every two years to the bare shell and replace all the materials to ensure passenger safety?

We got to experience 3 planes and  my favourite was the Airbus A380. All of the cockpits are full of buttons, switches and monitors, all designed by engineers.

In the end we had lots of fun and even got to try out the first class seats.
