Park High Marks 80th Anniversary of VE Day

On Thursday, 8th May 2025, Park High School proudly joined the nation in marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe  (VE) Day – the end of the Second World War in Europe.

The day was filled with activities designed to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the war, and to help students connect with this significant chapter in history.

A special assembly and tutor time reflections set the tone for the day, reminding students of the importance of VE Day, exploring the impact of the war and the incredible resilience of the wartime generation as well as the value of peace.

To bring the 1940s to life, our interactive electronic display boards featured striking wartime photographs and original newspaper headlines, many staff dressed in period clothing, helping transform the school into a vibrant tribute to the past and immersing students in the sights and stories of the era.

To mark the occasion, staff were also treated to a special breaktime tea, complete with traditional Victoria sponge cake — a sweet nod to the spirit of wartime Britain and a chance to reflect together on the day’s significance.

Throughout the week students were able to take part in our “Find Churchill” scavenger hunt, searching  the school for hidden images of Winston Churchill and crack the code for a chance to win a prize.

At midday, the entire school paused for a two-minute silence in honour of those who served. This moving moment concluded with a broadcast of Winston Churchill’s famous speech declaring victory in Europe.

VE Day at Park High was more than a celebration of peace and end of a devastating conflict; it was a day of learning, remembrance, and gratitude. Lest we forget.
