Year 12 Trip to EY in Canary Wharf: Exploring Careers in Finance

This week, a group of our Year 12 students studying Economics, Business, and Maths had the exciting opportunity to visit the prestigious EY (Ernst & Young) offices in Canary Wharf for a finance-focused Employability Skills Workshop. The visit was designed to give students a deeper understanding of the finance industry, explore potential career paths, and develop key professional skills.

Hosted by the EY Foundation, the workshop offered a dynamic mix of presentations, interactive activities, and networking opportunities. Students were introduced to the wide range of roles available within a global finance firm, and gained valuable insights into the skills and attributes employers look for in young professionals.

One of the highlights of the day was a hands-on business simulation activity, where students worked in teams to create and sell origami products. This challenge encouraged strategic thinking, creativity, and collaboration—demonstrating that finance is not just about numbers, but also about innovation, planning, and teamwork.

Throughout the day, students engaged with EY professionals from diverse backgrounds, learning how varied and inclusive the finance sector can be. From forensic analysts to former police inspectors, the speakers shared their unique journeys into finance, inspiring students to think broadly about their own futures.

Here are some reflections from our students:

“I found the EY Foundation experience to be very helpful and insightful in gauging an insight into finance opportunities for a future career path and current useful information about jobs within the industry.”
— Ravi, 12PI

“The trip was a great opportunity to find out about the versatility of working in a finance company. There are a wide range of jobs that are possible to pursue in a finance company, such as EY, and we were introduced to some roles; from a police department inspector to a forensics assistant manager, we met a variety of people from different backgrounds who had a common ground – finance.”
— Enoh, 12TI

“We took part in a finance activity which involved producing and selling origami products. This was a fun team challenge which showed us that finance is more about strategy, planning, and teamwork, not just handling money. We had to carefully decide what to make, how to sell it, and how to grow our ‘business’ starting with almost nothing. Overall, this was an amazing experience that gave me a real insight into finance, teamwork, and problem-solving in the business world.”
— Anaiya, 12PI

The trip was not only educational but also inspiring, helping students to see the real-world applications of their studies and encouraging them to consider careers in finance and business. We are grateful to EY and the EY Foundation for hosting such a valuable experience, and we look forward to future opportunities to connect our students with industry leaders.
