Year 10 Work Experience: Building Skills for the Future

Spilt over the course of two weeks, our Year 10 students had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the world of work through their placements. As an integral part of our Year 10 careers programme, this initiative gives students valuable exposure to professional environments and helps them consider possible future career paths, as well as offering students practical knowledge, a chance to build essential life skills and embody our school values: curiosity, resilience, teamwork, compassion, and integrity

Work experience aligns with Gatsby Benchmark 6, which states that every student should benefit from direct experiences in the workplace—whether through visits, shadowing, or placements—to support their career exploration and broaden their professional networks.

Students were placed across a wide variety of sectors including business offices, retail outlets, healthcare settings, and the creative industries. These placements enabled students to take on meaningful responsibilities and tasks, offering insights into workplace expectations and operations that go beyond what can be taught in school. These real-world experiences play a vital role in developing employability, independence, and key transferable skills, helping to inform students’ decisions about their post-16 education and career plans.

We were delighted to receive positive feedback from employers, who praised the professionalism, maturity, and enthusiasm of our students.

We hope the experience has given students a clearer understanding of the opportunities that lie ahead, and they bring with them increased confidence, insight, and motivation to pursue their next steps.

A big thank you to Mrs Foster and Mrs Patel for coordinating this important part of our careers provision.
