The Year 12 Politics trip to New York City and Washington DC was a week-long adventure, from the dazzling lights of Times Square to the solemn grandeur of the Lincoln Memorial .

Departing on 21st May, students arrived in New York City and immediately immersed themselves in its vibrant culture and history. Highlights included visits to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. A tour of the United Nations Headquarters and a visit to the Bronx High School of Science added a global and academic dimension to the experience, while the panoramic views from the Top of the Rock provided a memorable perspective of the city skyline.

After three action-packed days in New York, the group travelled to Washington DC, where the focus shifted to reflection and political insight. Students visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and took part in a guided tour of the US Capitol Building—deepening their understanding of American history, civil rights, and governance.

A particular highlight of the trip was the opportunity to visit two of our partner schools: the Bronx High School of Science in New York and Roosevelt High School in Washington DC. Students toured the campuses, observed lessons, and engaged in meaningful discussions with both students and staff. These visits provided valuable insight into the American education system and encouraged thoughtful cultural exchange. Many students found it inspiring to see how their peers across the Atlantic approach learning and political engagement.

The itinerary was carefully designed to balance education with exploration. Students enjoyed time to shop, sightsee, and share meals together—strengthening friendships and building independence along the way.

Student Reflections:

“The visits to many different museums were very informative and allowed me to expand my knowledge of historical and political events. We visited 2 different schools, each with very different approaches to learning but both were eye-opening for me. Every day was full of adventure and each new place we visited offered something unique. This opportunity also gave me so many skills, such as learning how to navigate a new country. I made some amazing memories with friends that I won’t forget. I am incredibly grateful for this experience and would do it again!” - Amber

“This trip was definitely a fantastic, rich and unforgettable journey. Washington offered a shift in atmosphere… Exploring the White House and the Capitol Building provided a deep connection to the country’s past and present.” - Zahra

“Our recent school trip to New York City and Washington DC was unforgettable and well-organised! From the moment we arrived in the bustling streets of New York, the excitement was palpable… It was amazing to see famous places from movies and history books come to life. It was not only educational, there was plenty of time for sightseeing, group activities, and even some free time to explore with friends… It broadened our horizons, brought our class closer together, and left us with memories we’ll cherish forever” - Angelica

Mrs O'Dwyer, Headteacher, said: “We all know that trips such as these create life-long memories. We are thrilled to give our students experiences such as this as part of our rich programme of trips and visits”.

A huge thank you goes to Ms Cramp, Ms Wilkinson, and Mr Whittaker for their dedication and hard work in making this incredible experience possible. The trip not only brought our students' textbooks to life, but also enriched their understanding of American politics, inspired curiosity, and fostered lasting connections.
