Animal Observations at London Zoo

On Thursday 17th December 2016, all Year 12 Psychologists carried out some real-life psychological research at London Zoo. Regents' Park was in full autumn display as luckily the weather held, for most part with a brief shower in the late afternoon.

The students designed and carried out a range of animal observations to gain hands-on experience of event sampling and inter-observer reliability. The students chose their own animals to observe and have worked in groups to present and evaluate their findings to the rest of the psychology classes.

It is important that students have the chance to carry out empirical research to appreciate the methodological issues involved in psychological enquiry as well as the more complicated ethical issues surrounding extrapolation from animal studies” said Ms Backory, -Psychology Teacher and Trip Organiser.

A year 12 student said that they felt carrying out real life research helped them to embed knowledge learnt in the class, preparing them better for their exams and higher education.
