Park High School

On Tuesday 27th March 60 of our Year 9 students took part in a STEM Day. The event was run by the Smallpeice Trust and is part of our celebrations of 2018 being the year of Engineering.

The Day started with students taking part in a Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills exercise to help identify the best role for them in the main project. They then got the chance to put their creativity and problem-solving skills to work with others in a Smart Building Project where they were challenged to design and make a water-tight water-collection unit with a filtration system. They also needed to assemble and solder an electronic water-detector and make a circuit for an electric pump which would detect and pump the water that was collected. This water could then be used to flush toilets and water plants in a Smart building.

STEM Day activities are designed to complement the National Curriculum in science, technology, engineering and maths by demonstrating the link between what’s taught in the classroom with the wider world. They are especially beneficial for students in the process of choosing Key Stage 4 options and are interested in these job sectors.

Our students really enjoyed this interactive experience and really made the most of creating innovative and technically efficient products.
