World Book Day Celebrations

On Thursday 5th March, Park High School celebrated World Book Day. The Scholastics Book Fair ran from Monday 2nd - Friday 6th March in the main hall during break times and lunch times. There were some lovely moments there throughout the week, a year 9 student persuaded a reluctant reader in his year group to read more because he believes 'reading is crucial to gaining knowledge!' and another student offered to help pay for a book that another student did not have the full amount for and they then both agreed to share the book, so they could discuss it afterwards.

On Thursday 5th March, Year 7 and 8 students were encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character, it was brilliant to see how many of them made an amazing effort with their book character costumes.

The day began with a Year 7 assembly, where writer, storyteller and teacher Patrick Ryan captivated our Year 7s. Patrick Ryan has worked as a teacher and professional storyteller for over forty years, he regularly tours Britain, Europe and the US performing, lecturing and conducting a variety of workshops. Patrick has written for the BBC and has also actively participated in several major storytelling projects. All Year 7 tutor groups experienced a workshop with Patrick in which he delivered traditional folktales that inspired classic writers such as Dickens, Shakespeare and Stoker and also included stories from South Asian cultures. This was Patrick's first visit to our learning community and he commented on how 'bright and attentive' our students were and was impressed by their high levels of engagement and thoughtful questions throughout the day.

The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to promote reading for fun. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

We had a wonderful day celebrating the magic of reading for World Book Day. We hope our Park High students enjoyed the day and hopefully we have inspired our young people to read for pleasure and enjoyment.

We look forward to our annual Book Week from the 6th - 10th July.
